Debt Recovery in Egypt: What Legal Steps Are Available?

Before turning to the courts, direct communication or a formal demand notice is often the most time- and cost-effective first step. A clear, well-drafted demand letter stating the amount owed, its legal basis, and the required payment date can frequently lead to a quick settlement without the need for lengthy court proceedings.

If the debt is supported by clear documentation (invoices, checks, or delivery receipts) and its underlying basis is not seriously disputed, a creditor may pursue a "payment order" procedure — a simplified, comparatively faster track than ordinary litigation. If the debt is genuinely disputed, filing an ordinary lawsuit becomes the appropriate path, and for complex commercial disputes, Egypt's specialized Economic Courts (established under Law No. 120 of 2008) may be the competent forum.

After obtaining a final judgment or payment order, the actual enforcement stage follows through the enforcement departments, which may include garnishing bank accounts or salaries, or seizing movable assets and selling them at auction to satisfy the debt.
